Fire Station Tours

Both Garden City Fire Stations are staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Families and individual guests are always welcome to stop by during daylight hours for an informal visit. The Garden City Fire Department encourages Garden City residents to get to know their local firefighters and take the opportunity to see firsthand how a fire station operates and what a fire truck looks like up close.

Community organizations and groups of five or more should arrange tours by calling at least two weeks in advance. Call 620-276-1140 during regular business hours, 8 am until 5 pm, Monday through Friday. At the time of the call, the following information will be required:

  • Choice of date and time for tour
  • Approximate age range of group
  • Approximate number of children and adults
  • Contact name and number(s)

In addition to fire safety and prevention, tour groups will learn about fire station operations. They will be shown the fire trucks and equipment and where the firefighters work, eat and sleep.

Tours are planned based on the age and skill level of the group. Education in fire safety and prevention is a key element to all fire station tours. Depending on the age group and the size of the group, tours may last anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes. As part of the event, birthday party groups may tour the fire station (with the advanced notice requirements fulfilled), but the actual party may not be held at the station.

Our stations are working fire stations and therefore our day- to-day schedule can be unpredictable. There is always the chance the crew may need to leave during the tour to respond to an emergency call. They also may not be in the station at the designated tour time for the same reason. Should either of these situations occur, it may be necessary to reschedule your tour for another day.

Fire Truck Appearances

The City of Garden City and the Garden City Fire Department share with the community our extreme pride in our fire and rescue trucks. When not using the apparatus to respond to a fire scene or to the site of a collision, we are using them as tools to assist with public fire safety and fire prevention education.

Schools, churches, and other community organizations, including neighborhoods holding block parties, may request a fire truck by calling at least two weeks in advance. Call 620-276-1140 during regular business hours, 8 am until 5 pm, Monday through Friday. At the time of the call, the following information will be required:

  • Event date and time.
  • Contact name and number(s) - it will be necessary for the Administrative Assistant to call you back to confirm the date and time.

Firefighters will discuss safety information geared towards the age level of the group. They will teach both children and adults the importance of wearing seat belts, of having a fire escape plan, and when 911 should and should not be used. Truck demonstrations include explanations of equipment and tools carried on the truck and how the firefighters might be called to use them in certain emergencies.

Please be aware that all fire trucks remain in service during their appearance and may have to leave in order to respond to an emergency. In addition, the truck and crew may be late in arriving if they have an emergency call prior to their scheduled arrival time.

Birthday Shoutouts

In 2020 the fire department began doing birthday shout-outs for children in the community. Firefighters drive by the residence with lights and sirens on and shout happy birthday over the loud speakers. If you are interested in an event like this contact the Department to schedule at least one week in advance.
