Open Burning & Bonfire Requirements

Burning Regulations

The City of Garden City and the City of Holcomb prohibit the burning of trash and materials within their respective city limits. Recreational burning of limbs and logs are allowed in approved fire pits or chimeneas, provided that the fire pit or chimenea is located not less that 15 feet from a structure.

Burn permits for residences and agricultural land outside the city limits may be obtained by calling the Garden City Fire Department at 620-276-1140. All burn permits will be inspected before approval is granted.

Burn permits are only good for a one-day period. Each day burning occurs requires a separate permit. Burn permits will not be issued if any of the following occur:

  • Wind speed is, or forecasted to be, above 15 mph.
  • The fire shall not be within 25 feet of any structure or vehicle.
  • Burning is not allowed on days that have been declared a Red Flag Day.
  • Any other violation of the Kansas Open Burning Regulations.

Bonfire Permits

Bonfires are allowed by permit only and are limited to two per year per organization. Only natural materials such as tree limbs and brush may be used as firewood. Fencing, pallets, siding and cut lumber are not allowed. Bonfires shall be limited to three hours in length and must be completely extinguished no later than 11 pm. All burning shall take place in an approved location, observing the following safety rules:

  • Burn only when the wind speed is between 5 and 15 mph.
  • The fire shall be attended by a responsible person at all times.
  • The fire shall not be within 25 feet of any structure, vehicle, or property lines.
  • Burn piles shall not be larger than 10 feet in diameter.
